Historique :	Œuvre exécutée en 1894-1895. Il s'agit d'une réduction de la composition décorative exécutée pour la maison du Peuple de Bruxelles. Œuvre exposée pour la première fois au salon des Indépendants de 1895. Extrait du Journal inédit de Paul Signac : 15 septembre 1894 : Quel plaisir des gens qui n'ont pas d'oeil peuvent-ils y trouver, puisque nous cherchons simplement de belles lignes, et de belles couleurs, sans souci de mode, d'anecdote ou de littérature !... Je suis sûre de pouvoir faire un tableau où toutes les règles d'harmonie seraient renversées, où je ferais le contraire de ce que je crois être le beau... et que personne n'y verra rien ! S'il y a des 'points' ce sera toujours du Signac ! .
